Balefire was founded on Imbolc in 1994. It has ranged in size from the original 5 members up to more than 15 at one time or another. Primarily a teaching coven, Balefire meets for New and Full Moons and Sabbats. In addition to our liturgical classes, we teach other topics as well. Our tradition, Blue Star, is alternately referred to as British Traditionalist Witchcraft and as highly eclectic. We are unusual in many ways, including our deep love for the music in our liturgy, our commitment to an Outer Court, or Grove, of laypeople and our tolerant attitude towards children in ritual. Each coven in Blue Star is autonomous, with no universally recognized head or heads of the tradition. There is no official Council of Elders, though many initiates communicate with others regarding issues of great importance. Blue Star is a mystery tradition with a 3 degree system of training. In addition to the 3 degrees, there are the rites of dedication (essentially a layperson's rite of passage) and neophyte (which is preparatory to initiation). |
Useful Information: |
Training in Blue Star is a lengthy undertaking, with most working for more than 5 years to attain the 3rd degree of initiation. It is not to be undertaken lightly, but is greatly rewarding. There are Blue Star Groves in many areas of the country, with more appearing as time goes by. Certain areas have clusters of Groves. For example, Balefire is located in central New Jersey. There are at least 4 other Groves also located in NJ. Other highly concentrated areas include Minneapolis and Mass. If you are interested in locating a Grove near you, feel free to send us an e-mail. Some Blue Star initiates are willing to do distance teaching, too. Thanks for your time and interest. |
